Appalachian Sunrise
The twin beams of our headlamps cut through the pre-dawn darkness, illuminating our footsteps along the Appalachian Trail. With each step of our ascent, the earthy fragrance of spruce grew stronger. Behind us was Carver's Gap. Our destination, Round Bald's summit, lay three-quarters of a mile ahead, a gradual climb of 300 feet through the dim evergreen woods. It was June 20th, 2024, and our goal was to witness and photograph the first light on the longest day of the year. Though the vibrant rhododendrons of the Roan Highlands draw many visitors in June, our focus for this day, the Summer Solstice, was to capture the dawn.
We reached the summit of Round Bald by 5:45 AM as a subtle illumination was beginning to paint the eastern horizon. I set up my Canon R5, opting for the wide perspective of my 15-35mm lens to capture the unfolding panorama. A faint breeze blew from the east, prompting me to zip up my jacket – it was surprisingly chilly at the summit. Gradually, the light intensified, an orange blush staining the sky and revealing the layered silhouettes of those rounded blue mountaintops. It was noticeably quiet and calm and I felt a genuine appreciation for being present in such a beautiful moment.
The photographer's ephemeris had indicated that the sunrise would occur at 6:12 AM, and it has never steered me wrong before. But knowing the time is a far cry from experiencing the event. So when the sun did in fact break the horizon at exactly 6:12am, a sense of delighted surprise washed over us, a reminder that some wonders transcend mere calculation.
Sharing this moment with Bill amplified its magic. He seemed particularly surprised and thrilled by the unfolding spectacle, his genuine wonder making it even more special for me. Though the sky lacked dramatic clouds, the sunrise possessed an inherent beauty, intensified by our shared presence and the significance of it being the summer solstice.
The photograph I captured that morning frames the layered blue mountains beneath a sky painted with a soft wash of deep red at the horizon and transitioning to orange and yellow above the rising sun. It’s a still image, yet behind it lies the story of our pre-dawn journey, the fragrant ascent, the quiet anticipation, and the shared wonder of experiencing the summer solstice together on the summit of an Appalachian mountaintop. Later, bathed in the full light of day, we turned our attention to the rhododendrons, the usual stars of this breathtaking landscape. But the true symphony of that morning played out in the silent moments before dawn, culminating in the shared surprise of the sun's radiant arrival, a reminder that even the most predictable moments can hold a touch of the extraordinary, captured forever in a single photograph.
